If the egg is unfertilized, the lining sheds, thus beginning the female cycle. The contractions are caused by the release of the body's prostaglandins, a hormone produced by the lining of the womb. Period pain can happen with young girl's first period, but most often will occur several months later as the menstrual cycle regulates.The symptoms of period pain can vary from woman to woman. Some women may experience a mild soreness in the abdominal region, while others can feel a radial pain that circles around the back and goes down the thighs.
